Patriots: My Free Black Quaker Family

This book is named in honor of our Truitt Family beginning with Abner Truitt Sr. who was born free in 1760 Cross Creek, Delaware when it was still a British Territory. Soon Delaware would be the 1st state in the United States of America and Abner’s name would appear on the 1st U.S. Census in 1790; the year George Washington became the 1st U.S. President, and the 13 colonies became the 13 states of the Union.

While researching my book, many I interviewed believed all African Americans were slaves in America until 1865. We’re all too familiar with the brutal legacy of slavery in the American Confederacy; Most of us are less familiar with the story of African Americans experiencing centuries of freedom, dating back to the mid-1700s.
